History

Established on a site of ancient occupation (Gallo-Roman), the chapel of Crénénan is dedicated to the worship of the Virgin of Fire. The origins of its foundation are unknown: oral tradition attributes it to the order of the Templars or of Saint John of Jerusalem. The present building, of rectangular plan with a very long sacristy attached to the north aisle and porch tower, contains no elements anterior to the 15th century. A second period of construction is dated by inscription on the wall-plates of the years 1642-1653. The third stage was in the 19th century, with the building of the porch tower. The interior decoration of the chapel is remarkable with its wall-plates carved with picturesque scenes (1652), and the vault lining painted by Le Corre, painter of Pontivy (1716). These works were classified historic monument on 24 May 1948. Also classified are the high altar and the retable, by order of 23 July 1963. A fountain of devotion built in the 17th century completes the site of pilgrimage still important.
