En août 1943, le général Erick Marcks, qui commande le 84e corps d'armée, établit son quartier général à Saint Lô. Il réquisitionne le château des Commines situé en plein centre ville et fait construire dans le parc un grand bunker de commandement. De là, son état major peut continuer à diriger les opérations à l'abri des bombardements alliés. Construit en béton armé, cet ouvrage de 28,65 m de longueur et 10,30 mètres de largeur se compose de onze salles. Il s'agit d'une SonderKonstruktion , c'est à dire qu'il échappe à la standardisation commune à de nombreux blockhaus allemands. On note qu'il n'est pas pourvu de tobrouks et/ou d'une caponnière pour assurer la défense de ses occupants dans un périmètre immédiat. Non touché par les bombardements de juin 1944, cet ouvrage est en bon état et conserve ses portes blindées.

History
In August 1943, General Erick Marcks, who commands the 84th Army Corps, establishes his headquarters at Saint Lô.
