Historique

History
The construction of a lighthouse at the point of Barfleur had been proposed by Vauban to address the problem of 'wreckers'. It was carried out successfully by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rouen in 1775, under the direction of the engineer of bridges and highways Duchesne. In 1825, according to the 'general programme for lighting the coasts of France', two consecutive lighthouses were to embrace the entire field separating them. It was first planned to raise the tower of 1775, but the building proved not wide enough. A new lighthouse of neo-classical style was undertaken 60 metres from the first in 1829, under the direction of engineer Morice de la Rüe. The light was lit in 1835. Dwellings and stores had been built on either side of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was electrified in 1893. The machinery rooms and cellars were converted into apartments and an extension was erected against the north enclosure wall to house them. The foundation of the lighthouse was extended. A keeper's house was built at the end of the 19th century, facing the lighthouse.
