Historique

History
On 6 December 1916 the decision was made to create an airship base on the site of Ecausseville. Work began in early 1917, with the construction of a first wooden hangar. On 31 October 1917 construction began on the second airship hangar. The structure, built according to the Hennebique process (reinforced concrete structure supporting a thin concrete shell), was completed in 1919 and its door in 1920. 150 metres long, 24 metres wide and 28 metres high, it is made up of 25 reinforced concrete frames and covered with 2540 prefabricated concrete tiles. Designed to house ZD 3-type aerostats intended for anti-submarine warfare, the development of aviation rendered this building obsolete and it never housed any airship. Decommissioned in 1927, the centre was handed over in 1939 to the Naval Artillery Command of Cherbourg. Equipment for submarines was stored there until 1994. In 1999, the building was ceded by the National Navy to an association.
