La colonne commémorative de la duchesse d'Angoulême, inaugurée le 22 juin 1828, fut érigée en mémoire de la visite de la Dauphine à Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, venue rendre hommage à la résistance des Vendéens lors des évènements de 1793. Conçue sur les plans de l'architecte François-Villers, elle se situe dans l'axe de l'abbatiale et présente un triple intérêt patrimonial. uvre commémorative, le monument s'inscrit aussi dans un contexte historique et politique de réaffirmation du pouvoir royal de la dynastie des Bourbon. Contemporaine du tombeau du général vendéen Bonchamps conservé dans l'église, la colonne forme un ensemble cohérent avec cette dernière ainsi qu'avec la chapelle Cathelineau, d'époque plus tardive, construite pour abriter le tombeau d'un autre chef vendéen.

History
The commemorative column of the Duchess of Angoulême, inaugurated on 22 June 1828, was erected in memory of the visit of the Dauphine to Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, who came to pay homage to the resistance of the Vendeans during the events of 1793. Designed according to the plans of architect François-Villers, it is located in the axis of the abbatiale and presents a triple patrimonial interest. A commemorative work, the monument is also inscribed in a historical and political context of reaffirmation of the royal power of the Bourbon dynasty. Contemporary with the tomb of the Vendean general Bonchamps preserved in the church, the column forms a coherent ensemble with the latter as well as with the chapel Cathelineau, of a later period, built to house the tomb of another Vendean leader.
