Face au Poitou, sur le haut Layon, le château de Passavant est l'une des places-fortes créées par le comte d'Anjou Foulques Nerra dans le premier quart du 11e siècle. Ruinée, elle est reconstruite après 1210 avec une enceinte cantonnée de tours à quoi s'ajoute au 15e siècle un puissant logis à haute tour d'escalier. Le château est ravagé par les huguenots en 1574. Depuis lors, il n'a été que médiocrement réoccupé (reconstruction d'un nouveau logis au 18e siècle ; puis vers 1930, réaménagement en maison viticole avec celliers) , mais sauvé de la ruine complète grâce à cela.

History
Facing Poitou, on the upper Layon, the château of Passavant is one of the strongholds created by the Count of Anjou Foulques Nerra in the first quarter of the 11th century. Ruined, it is rebuilt after 1210 with an enclosure flanked by towers to which is added in the 15th century a powerful main dwelling with a tall stair tower. The château is devastated by the Huguenots in 1574. Since then, it has been only moderately reoccupied (reconstruction of a new main dwelling in the 18th century; then towards 1930, conversion to a wine-making house with cellars), but saved from complete ruin by this.
