Sur l'emplacement d'une seigneurie attestée au 16e siècle, au-dessus d'un vallon profond affluent au Layon, René Montrieux, administrateur des Ardoisières d'Angers, fait dessiner et édifier entre 1853 et 1856 un parc et un nouveau château par l'architecte-paysagiste Choulot et l'architecte Mortier, tous deux parisiens et de renom. Plan massé emprunté à la culture maniériste de Jacques du Cerceau et Salomon de Brosse : jeu illusionniste des perspectives et de la polychromie des matériaux (ardoises, briques) , profusion exceptionnelle du décor sculpté de façade en trophées de chasse, ... La chapelle est construite en 1888 par l'architecte angevin Beignet.

History
On the site of a seigneury attested in the 16th century, above a deep valley tributary of the Layon, René Montrieux, administrator of the Slate Quarries of Angers, has a park and a new château designed and built between 1853 and 1856 by landscape architect-designer Choulot and architect Mortier, both from Paris and of repute. Compact plan borrowed from the mannerist culture of Jacques du Cerceau and Salomon de Brosse: illusionistic play of perspectives and polychromy of materials (slate, brick), exceptional profusion of sculpted façade decoration in hunting trophies, ... The chapel is built in 1888 by Angevin architect Beignet.
