La carrière souterraine de la Seigneurie à Doué-la-Fontaine est, à l'heure actuelle, le seul site connu et partiellement étudié, de fabrication de sarcophage datant du haut Moyen Age. Les fouilles réalisées entre 1989 et 1996 ont mis en évidence le mode d'exploitation des bancs de calcaire coquillier employé lors de l'utilisation de cette carrière dans le courant du 6e siècle. L'exploitation de ce réseau de galerie sur près d'un hectare a notamment permis de comprendre les méthodes d'extraction, la logique de progression, les systèmes d'éclairage, d'aération et d'évacuation des sarcophages. History
The underground quarry of the Seigneurie at Doué-la-Fontaine is, at the present time, the only known and partially studied site for the manufacture of sarcophagi dating from the early Middle Ages. Excavations carried out between 1989 and 1996 revealed the method of exploitation of the beds of shell-bearing limestone used during the utilisation of this quarry in the course of the 6th century. The exploitation of this network of galleries over nearly a hectare notably made it possible to understand the extraction methods, the logic of progression, the systems of lighting, ventilation and evacuation of the sarcophagi. The entire chain of production was able to be reconstructed from the extraction itself through to the elaboration of the tubs and lids of the sarcophagi.
