Historique
Description

History
The Town Hall of Astaffort is built at the eastern extremity of a block of buildings. It opens onto public thoroughfare to the South, East and North. Following the model of the previous town hall, the Town Hall is installed on the first floor of the building, carried by arcades on all three sides. The ground floor is left open, originally serving for the holding of markets. The East façade is the principal one. Symmetrical, it is pierced by a triple opening and decorated on the ground floor with medallions "R" and "F" and on the upper floor with Ionic pilasters. At the top, it is crowned by a pediment whose curves may evoke the baroque style. This pediment is decorated with a clock and the arms of the commune. It bears engraved the republican motto and the date 1904. Exposed stone chains enhance the angles of the building. The North and South façades are pierced by arcades and rectangular openings with basket-handle surround. The forecourt, left open, has in addition to the arcades four metal pillars to carry the floor where the town hall premises are located. These pillars bear the inscription "Granges et cie, Agen". The concrete paving of the forecourt reveals different geometric patterns. A staircase leaves this forecourt and goes up to a mezzanine where it divides into two parts to serve the gallery making the round of the municipal spaces. The railings of the staircase and upper gallery are in carved wood. The Town Hall is thus organized in a ring around a gallery overhanging the forecourt at ground level. This gallery makes the complete round of the municipal spaces and allows the serving of the different rooms of the latter. The ceiling of this vast open space is decorated with mouldings and pierced by a skylight carried by a metal roof structure. The Council Chamber has retained its original decoration. It comprises notably two fireplaces at its North and South extremities. The other working spaces of the town hall have been refurbished but have been able to retain wooden doors. A staircase gives access to the roof of the building.
Description
At the beginning of the 20th century, the commune of Astaffort still had, as its town hall, a building dating from the 16th or 17th century which, under the Ancien Régime, already housed the consuls and jurats of the town. This common house already topped a hall hosting a market for poultry and grain. In 1903 the decision was made to demolish the old town hall. The new Town Hall was built by the Agen architect Albert Courau at the location of the previous one and completed on 11 December 1904. The project also provided for the opening of a street to the South (the town hall was previously attached to the neighbouring house). A passage was first opened, then the neighbouring houses were completely removed in 1928 to allow the development of a square.
