Historique
L'église, reconstruite à la fin du 17e siècle, sur un plan à trois nefs et choeur à chevet plat, a été voûtée en 1880 en brique plâtre sur croisée d'ogives reçues sur de gros culots, en remplacement des lambris peints d'origine, à l'exemple de la chapelle Saint-Benoît à Marmande. Les clefs sculptées rappellent cette construction et cette transformation. Cette dernière a condamné un important décor liturgique décrit dans un document épiscopal du 20 août 1689, dont il reste un grand tableau de la Décollation de Saint-Jean-Baptiste, inscrit à l'Inventaire supplémentaire en 1975. La particularité de cette église est de ne pas posséder de clocher en propre. La proximité immédiate d'une ancienne porte de la ville, convertie à cet effet, a remédié à cette absence. L'église a été l'objet dans les années trente d'une grande campagne de décoration qui a intéressé aussi bien la vitrerie des collatéraux due à l'atelier Thomas à Valence (Drôme) que la surface des principaux murs. Un peintre d'origine italienne, Carlo Masutti, qui a oeuvré dans d'autres églises du département, a exécuté en 1936 la peinture qui orne le choeur consacrée à la Décollation de Saint-Jean-Baptiste et le décor de draperies et de faux-marbres du choeur et des arcades de la nef.

History
The church, rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, on a plan with three naves and choir with flat chevet, was vaulted in 1880 in brick and plaster on rib vaults supported on large corbels, replacing the original painted timber ceilings, following the example of the chapel of Saint-Benoît in Marmande. The sculpted keystones recall this construction and this transformation. The latter condemned an important liturgical decoration described in an episcopal document of 20 August 1689, of which there remains a large painting of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, registered in the Supplementary Inventory in 1975. The particularity of this church is that it does not have its own bell tower. The immediate proximity of an old city gate, converted for this purpose, remedied this absence. The church was the subject in the thirties of a major decoration campaign which concerned both the glazing of the side aisles due to the Thomas workshop in Valence (Drôme) and the surface of the main walls. A painter of Italian origin, Carlo Masutti, who worked in other churches of the department, executed in 1936 the painting which adorns the choir dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and the decoration of draperies and false marbling of the choir and arcades of the nave.
