Oeuvre d'Antoine Rohal, le monument fut édifié en 1951 à l'initiative du Comité national du souvenir des héros de Châteaubriant. Il commémore les massacres d'otages qui ont suivi la mort de Karl Hotz, responsable des troupes d'occupation en Loire-Inférieure, le 20 octobre 1941. Le monticule conçu par Rohal intègre 183 alvéoles destinées à recevoir la terre de différents lieux d'exécution. Les neuf poteaux d'exécution ne sont plus ceux de 1941.

History
Work by Antoine Rohal, the monument was erected in 1951 at the initiative of the National Committee for the Memory of the Heroes of Châteaubriant. It commemorates the massacres of hostages which followed the death of Karl Hotz, head of the occupying forces in Loire-Inférieure, on 20 October 1941. The mound designed by Rohal incorporates 183 cells intended to receive earth from different places of execution. The nine execution posts are no longer those of 1941.
