Historique
Avant sa mort en1906, un médecin du Puy, le docteur Paul Vibert, avait demandé à sa famille de faire ériger une fontaine monumentale surmontée de la sculpture de la nymphe Amalthée et la chèvre de Jupiter, oeuvre de Pierre Julien, en remplacement de la borne-fontaine qui se trouvait en face de son immeuble. L'original, réalisé en marbre blanc, avait été commandé en 1786 pour la laiterie du château de Rambouillet à P. Julien, sculpteur reconnu, originaire de la Haute-Loire et installé à Paris. Avec l'accord de la municipalité, les héritiers firent élever dès 1906 la fontaine, dont les plans furent dessinés par l'architecte départemental Verdier. La reproduction du groupe sculpté fut confiée au sculpteur-fondeur parisien F. Barbedienne. Le modèle des bas-reliefs en bronze qui ornent les faces du piédestal sont dûs au sculpteur Barthélémy.
Description
La fontaine, de forme pyramidale, comprend une partie basse en pierre qui sert de support à un groupe sculpté en bronze. La structure inférieure en pierre blanche est à quatre faces et comporte trois vasques accolées qui sont surmontées d'un piédestal orné de trois bas-reliefs en bronze identiques. Ceux-ci représentent un dauphin crachant l'eau. Sur la 4ème face, au dessus d'un petit banc est apposée une plaque commémorative. Le groupe sculpté sommital est la reproduction à l'identique de l'oeuvre originale : une jeune fille assise nue sur un rocher tenant de la main par un licol une grande chèvre au cou baissé pour s'abreuver à la source.

History
Before his death in 1906, a doctor from Puy, Doctor Paul Vibert, had asked his family to erect a monumental fountain surmounted by the sculpture of the nymph Amalthea and Jupiter's goat, a work by Pierre Julien, in place of the drinking fountain that stood opposite his building. The original, executed in white marble, had been commissioned in 1786 for the dairy of the château de Rambouillet from P. Julien, a renowned sculptor, originally from Haute-Loire and established in Paris. Description
The fountain, of pyramidal form, comprises a lower part in stone which serves as a support for a group sculpted in bronze. The lower structure in white stone is four-sided and comprises three attached basins which are surmounted by a pedestal adorned with three identical bronze bas-reliefs. These represent a dolphin spouting water. On the 4th face, above a small bench is affixed a commemorative plaque. The uppermost sculpted group is an identical reproduction of the original work: a young girl sitting naked on a rock holding by a halter a large goat with its neck lowered to drink from the spring.
