History

Hunting pavilion of U-shaped plan with façade on courtyard and façade on park, all surrounded by water-filled moats. The current composition of the property is distributed over two courtyards, one of which is devoted to outbuildings and was built in the 19th century. The buildings on courtyard of the outbuildings are formed of barn, stables, woodshed and dwellings. The central block is composed of a vast vestibule open on each side by large doors. The side rooms form a suite of rooms, library and a dining room. The latter preserves an ensemble of wainscoting and wooden cupboards whose panelling could be from the earliest years of the 18th century. At the two ends of the central block, outbuilding buildings were transformed in order to increase the number of habitable rooms. In the 1920s, the fitting-out of the west wing led to the addition of a level and the whole was extended by an orangery. The castle preserves a rather rare, even unique vestibule in the Centre region, furnished with a painted ceiling with barrel vault. The subject represented is that of Diana's chariot framed by allegories of the four seasons. This painted decoration was executed on a red preparation. It is completed by two royal portraits painted directly on the mantels of stone fireplaces of the partition walls. Louis XIV standing and in armour before a besieged town, after the portrait made by Hyacinthe Rigaud. The portrait is signed Louis-Alexandre Lefebvre. Young Louis XV is also represented standing and in armour, after a work by Jean-Baptiste Van Loo.
