Le ministère de l'Air décide, dans les années trente, de construire un aéroport international pour hydravions transatlantiques sur le site de Biscarrosse. Les travaux débutent en 1937 et les vols débutent dès 1938 alors que les infrastructures sont en cours d'achèvement. Occupé par l'armée allemande pendant la guerre, l'aéroport fut détruit puis reconstruit, à la fin des hostilités, pourvu d'équipements modernes. La base demeure opérationnelle jusqu'en 1955 puis affectée au ministère des Armées en 1962. Les deux hangars métalliques sont démontés en 1992, l'ancien Hôtel des Passagers est aménagé en colonie de vacances et les bâtiments de la Vigie sont laissés à l'abandon.

History
The Ministry of Air decided, in the nineteen-thirties, to construct an international airport for transatlantic flying boats on the site of Biscarrosse. Work began in 1937 and flights started in 1938 while the infrastructure was still under completion. Occupied by the German army during the war, the airport was destroyed and then rebuilt, at the end of hostilities, equipped with modern facilities. The base remained operational until 1955 then allocated to the Ministry of Defence in 1962. The two metal hangars were dismantled in 1992, the old Passengers' Hotel was converted into a holiday colony and the Vigie buildings were left abandoned.
