Historique

History
After the destruction of the city of Maguelone in the 8th century, the counts settle at Mauguio in the second half of the 10th century, erecting a feudal motte. The first mention of the castrum appears in 996. The motte measures 24m altitude, 15m diameter at the summit and 160 to 170m diameter at the base. Traces of moats, palisades, drainage channels, a grain silo and a calade have been unearthed. The site must have been abandoned at the end of the 11th century following the displacement of the castle towards the first enclosure. The episcopal dwelling having succeeded the building presumably corresponds to the location of the buildings of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, transformed in the 18th and 19th centuries, then encompassed in later constructions. In 1820, the municipality acquires the site and makes arrangements there such as the construction of the water tower at the location of the belvedere tower in 1903-1904. The hydraulic arrangements are designed on a reinforced concrete structure, including decorative elements. This work is the occasion to introduce a new element of urbanism: the public garden. This site is exceptional in its scale and preservation, and exemplary in its history of the morphogenesis of this type of habitat of castral origin inducing the circular evolution of the old town.
