Historique
La congrégation des Spiritains a été fondée le 27 mai 1703 avec pour objectif la création d'un séminaire pour des étudiants pauvres acceptant par la suite d'évangéliser d'autres pauvres. La congrégation du Saint-Coeur de Marie a été créé en 1841 afin de venir en aide aux esclaves noirs et aux affranchis. Cette dernière s'établit à Bordeaux en 1848, et la même année fusionne avec la congrégation des Spiritains. En 1856, est lancé le chantier de construction de la chapelle et des bâtiments annexes. La chapelle est terminée en 1858. Les vitraux et les décors peints sont réalisés entre 1860 et 1884. L'édifice de style néo-gothique présente comme particularité l'emploi de matériaux modernes tels que la fonte. Le programme décoratif peint est très développé et évoque les miniatures médiévales. C'est la seule chapelle des Spiritains construite au XIXe siècle.

History
The congregation of the Spiritans was founded on 27 May 1703 with the objective of creating a seminary for poor students who would subsequently accept the task of evangelising other poor people. The congregation of the Sacred Heart of Mary was created in 1841 in order to assist enslaved Black persons and the freed. The latter established itself in Bordeaux in 1848, and the same year merged with the congregation of the Spiritans. In 1856, the construction project of the chapel and annexed buildings was launched. The chapel was completed in 1858. The stained glass windows and painted decorations were realised between 1860 and 1884. The building of neo-gothic style presents as a particularity the use of modern materials such as cast iron. The painted decorative programme is highly developed and evokes medieval miniatures. It is the only chapel of the Spiritans constructed in the 19th century.
