Description

Description
Located less than three hundred metres from the historic centre of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, on the west side, the former Centre for agricultural progress, then agricultural training and promotion centre, designed in 1963 by Joseph Massota, stands out among the other constructions in the quarter, by its modernity directly inspired by Le Corbusier. The plot on which the building is located comprises, on the east side, a garden intended for vegetable and fruit crops. The building is laid out in a U around a central patio. The two wings are connected by a portico on the south side. The construction comprises three levels. In the basement are the ancillary spaces: garage, storage, heating plant as well as a small laboratory. Two entrances serve the ground floor: a main hall, situated at the back of the patio, facing the portico and an entrance situated at the south end of the east wing. The west wing houses a classroom of 70 m2 and a meeting room of 140 m2, which could be divided into two spaces thanks to a movable partition. The main hall serves both these two rooms, the stairwell, the sanitary facilities and a "domestic training" room, intended for farmers' wives. It is extended by a passage which leads to the offices of the director and his assistant, the extension officer and the secretary, situated in the east wing. On the first floor are two function dwellings, enhanced by an external terrace. The compact form of the building is lightened by the presence of the patio, by the curves which soften the angles of the construction, by the inclined form of the upper roof, which gives it an impression of lightness and by the cylindrical turret of the staircase. The openings are composed according to a regular rhythm based on a module of one metre wide, which one finds doubled on the west façade. On the north side, a play of alternated horizontal crosspieces, in concrete, animates the openings and creates a specific atmosphere inside the classrooms: the openings constitute veritable geometric pictures caressed by the soft and homogeneous light from the North. As in several of his other works, the architect plays on the contrast between raw concrete and rendered masonry, whose finishes seem fairly rough, but are inspired by traditional swept renders. The patio, enhanced with a basin, is treated as a zen garden and decorated with a decorative ceramic wall panel, due to the artist Pierre Saint-Paul, born in 1926.
