En raison de sa situation entre Penmarc'h et le raz de Sein, le port d'Audierne est considéré comme l'un des plus dangereux de France. Un audiernais, Julien Joseph Hippolyte Fénoux, capitaine de corvette pour la Royale invente en 1832 un dispositif de signaux d'une hauteur de 12 mètres pour guider les navires de retour au port d'Audierne. Le mât-pilote a permis de guider les navires pendant un siècle des côtes de Bayonne à celles d'Audierne.

Because of its situation between Penmarc'h and the raz de Sein, the port of Audierne is considered one of the most dangerous in France.
