Historique

History
The youth hostel in Brest is a major achievement of architect and urban planner Roland Schweitzer (1925-2018) and his collaborator, architect Philippe Jean, which testifies to a very carefully considered desire for harmony between its location - the former park of a bourgeois property - and the buildings, and to great attention paid to the people who will stay and work in this facility. On the basis of an initial project from 1968 amended several times, building permission was granted in September 1981 and work began in January of the following year, ending in May 1983. The programme comprises six buildings, of which the two main ones B1 and B2 contain most of the accommodation and administration functions: built in reinforced concrete clad with wood, they adopt a square plan on two levels covered with a flat roof, and are connected to each other by a covered walkway. B3 is a small timber building mainly devoted to the director's residence. B4 and B5 are two small pre-existing buildings converted into technical rooms. B6 is a pre-existing building enlarged in 1986 for accommodation use. Most of the interior fixtures and furnishings were designed or selected by the architect, and the ensemble today retains very great authenticity both exterior and interior.
