In 1857, the municipal council of Ouessant requested the construction of a second lighthouse to prevent the dangers of the reef of la Jument. Engineer Maitrot de Varennes signed the preliminary construction project in 1859. The truncated cone structure, built on a base of ashlar blocks of Kersanton granite, benefited from the improvements made to the Fresnel lenticular apparatus. The buildings adjoining the lighthouse evolved according to the technical improvements made to the optics. Enlarged at the time of the lighthouse's electrification in 1888, they were replaced in 1940-1941 by an architectural complex due to architect Georges Martin. At the same period, the lighthouse was fitted with a new lantern presented at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1937, which made it then the most powerful in the world.
