The existence of Frémeur hospital probably dates back to the 14th century (no founding deed preserved) and was rebuilt in 1528. Established near a watercourse at the limits of the town and consisting of a long and high building, at the end of which a chapel is built opening onto the sick wards through two galleries allowing them to attend services, it met the conceptions applied to hospital constructions of its era. It was modified and enlarged in the 18th and 19th centuries. Saint-Michel hospital was built at the end of the 19th century (1896-1898), thanks to the gift of M. de Kerjégu, deputy of Finistère. It constituted an exemplary architectural achievement of the application of criteria defined by hygienist doctors of that period. The Pasteurian revolution allowed the breaking up of the hospital into several small hospitals where isolation and asepsis were easily ensured: its inverted H-shaped plan presents four pavilions connected to a central body by covered circulation galleries; the rib vaults of its wards and the rounded corners of the walls are applications of Tollet's ideas in order to facilitate ventilation and aeration. The chapel was restored around 1874 by architect Bigot in neo-gothic style.
