Historique
Erigée en 1857 à l'initiative de François-Auguste Ducros, maire de Grignan (1837-1868), à la suite d'une souscription, la statue de Mme de Sévigné est due au sculpteur Louis Rochet. Elle se compose d'une bassin rectangulaire à pans coupés et d'un piédestal central en pierre, supportant une statue de bronze représentant Mme de Sévigné assise, tenant une plume dans sa main droite et une lettre dans sa main gauche. L'eau s'écoule dans le bassin par quatre masques à tête de lion en bronze, disposés deux par deux sur les grands côtés du soubassement. Sur les petits côtés du socle sont sculptés deux écus armoriés, accompagnés des inscriptions « armes des Bussy » (à l'ouest) et « armes de Sévigné » (à l'est). Sur les grands côtés, deux plaques de marbre enchâssées portent « Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné » (sud) et « Une souscription nationale a élevé cette statue à l'immortelle madame de Sévigné le 4 octobre 1857 » (nord).

History
Erected in 1857 at the initiative of François-Auguste Ducros, mayor of Grignan (1837-1868), following a public subscription, the statue of Mme de Sévigné is the work of sculptor Louis Rochet. It comprises a rectangular basin with cut corners and a central stone pedestal, supporting a bronze statue representing Mme de Sévigné seated, holding a pen in her right hand and a letter in her left hand. Water flows into the basin through four bronze lion-head masks, arranged in pairs on the long sides of the base. On the short sides of the plinth are carved two heraldic shields, accompanied by the inscriptions "arms of Bussy" (to the west) and "arms of Sévigné" (to the east). On the long sides, two inset marble plaques bear "Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné" (south) and "A national subscription raised this statue to the immortal Madame de Sévigné on 4 October 1857" (north).
