Eight windmills were erected on the territory of the commune of Vassieux, the construction period of the oldest dating back to the medieval period. To this day, only two windmills remain, built at the top of the La Mure hill, north of the village. The windmill situated to the East is the smallest. It is a round tower typical of Provençal or Languedocian type windmills. The interior probably housed a granary on the ground floor as well as a miller's room on the upper floor. Wings put to the wind by an internal rack ensured the functioning of the mechanism. The second windmill consists of an imposing cylindrical tower. A door facing east opens onto a corridor. In July 1944, it was used by the SS as a fortified position. The building is constructed on two levels, the ground floor being occupied by the granary and the second level serving as a miller's room. The room contained two millstones operated by a mechanism arranged under a cover. An internal rack allowed the rotation of the roof as well as the wings. The wooden elements of the windmill, in particular those composing the mechanism, have now disappeared. The construction period of the two windmills can be situated in the 17th century or at the end of the 16th century. The existence of these eight windmills, indispensable on this relatively arid plateau, represents a unique case in Rhône-Alpes and very rare in France. These were family mills. The La Mure mills were subsequently used as sheepfolds, tool sheds and then as lime kilns.
