Historique

History
The tower of the windmill of Beauvert is erected, around 1550-1555, on a parcel sold by the bishop of Viviers to the castellan of Donzère. Its construction takes place during the Wars of Religion. From 1608 onwards, the mill was victim to severe degradation until being recorded as "demolished" on the cadastral surveys of 1842. The tower is, to this day, practically intact. It presents itself in the form of a straight shaft built in rubble stone of limestone covered with lime mortar. The façade of the mill is oriented towards the east and treated in a monumental manner. A window surrounded by ashlar stones opens at the summit, vertically above the door and allowed the miller to watch over the proper conduct of the mill's activity. At the beginning of the 19th century, the floor of beaten earth was replaced by another of lime mortar. This first level of the mill served as a granary and storage for sacks of flour. The mill floor, accessible by stone steps, housed two millstones and could, occasionally, serve as a dwelling for the miller as seems to be suggested by the presence of a fireplace and a cupboard. The existence of a bonnet, of conical form and installed inside the tower allows the mill of Donzère to be classified among the "Provençal-type tower mills". The top of the wall is paved with large slabs in steps forming the "sleeping path" on which the bonnet came to rotate in order to present the sails to the wind. A rack-and-pinion allowed the rotation of the roof. Excavations have revealed traces of these installations as well as a threshing floor to the south of the tower. The mill of Beauvert is remarkable notably for its fortified character (deep foundations, doors with numerous locks and its loophole) which testifies to the troubled times that have marked its history.
