En 1899, l'industriel Emile Picard proposa un projet de funiculaire sur Bregille. Celui-ci ayant rencontré des obstacles dans sa réalisation, il présente, en 1905, un second projet de tramway, modifié par la suite avec un premier tronçon par funiculaire et un deuxième tronçon de tramway. Les travaux commencèrent en 1911 et le premier voyage eut lieu le 24 novembre 1912. Le funiculaire joua un rôle décisif dans le développement de Bregille. La fréquentation de la ligne augmenta à la fin de la guerre, en 1929, puis déclina dans les années 1970 et 1980. L'arrêt de la ligne s'effectua le 5 janvier 1988. La voie ferrée gravit le versant ouest de Bregille, depuis la gare aval, simple hangar d'abri, jusqu'à la gare amont où l'abri est adossé à un bâtiment rectangulaire. Ce bâtiment conserve en soubassement la machinerie d'origine, le moteur électrique de 1938 et des éléments du poste du machiniste, au rez-de-chaussée avec les bureaux et la salle d'attente.

History
In 1899, industrialist Emile Picard proposed a funicular project on Bregille. Work began in 1911 and the first journey took place on 24 November 1912. The funicular played a decisive role in the development of Bregille. The railway runs up the west slope of Bregille, from the lower station, a simple shelter shed, to the upper station where the shelter is backed against a rectangular building. This building retains in its basement the original machinery, the electric motor from 1938 and elements of the operator's post, on the ground floor with the offices and waiting room.
