At the end of the 18th century, site dominating the loop of the Doubs and furnished with small advanced works: the lunettes of Arçon (lunette of Chaudanne completed in 1792). Enlargement projects from 1820. Bastioned fort erected between 1841 and 1845, incorporating the tower of the former lunette.
