Creusement d'un canal de dérivation de la Dordogne décidé en 1837 ; plans confiés à l'ingénieur Vauthier ; travaux adjugés à des entrepreneurs de Bordeaux. Chantier commencé en 1838, canal ouvert en 1844. Canal utilisé jusqu'à la seconde guerre mondiale, malgré la concurrence du chemin de fer à partir de 1879. Propriété de l'Etat, mais concession à un syndicat intercommunal qui en assume l'exploitation et l'entretien.

History
Excavation of a Dordogne diversion canal decided in 1837; plans entrusted to engineer Vauthier; works contracted to entrepreneurs from Bordeaux. Work site begun in 1838, canal opened in 1844. Canal used until the Second World War, despite competition from the railway from 1879 onwards. State property, but concession to an intercommunal syndicate which assumes its operation and maintenance.
