Historique

History
This is one of the oldest fortified sites in Limousin, mentioned as early as 1038. The remains suggest a triangular enclosure on the lower spur, comprising a circular tower at the southern extremity, and another at the north-east entrance. The stronghold consisted of habitable buildings, fortification elements and a large outer bailey where there were a chapel, a barn and stables. The best-preserved section is found at the north-east angle, with the circular tower formerly crowned with machicolations and two gun-ports pierced at the base. To the south-west of this rose a main dwelling which was to comprise a wing returning to the east, a quadrangular stair tower occupying the corner. The main period of the castle appears to date back to Louis de Malval (late 14th century), a man of war associated with Du Guesclin, who no doubt equipped the residence with the defensive elements characteristic of his era.
