The history of this stud initiated by the creation, in 1783, of a first royal stallion depot was thwarted by the historical events, political changes and changes in breeding policy that followed that date. After two closures interrupted by a reopening in 1825, it was finally in 1842 that it was permanently re-established becoming the administrative seat of the North Brittany district. Its development was then encouraged by attention paid to the improvement of working horses. A new breed of horse: the Breton appears, of which Lamballe becomes the epicentre of production. The architecture of this complex is both sober and monumental combining the nobility of proportions with the functional simplicity of volumes. This stud constitutes a remarkable testimony to the history of equine breeding in Brittany since the end of the 18th century.
