Cap Fréhel is situated between the bay of Saint-Brieuc and the anchorage of Saint-Malo. From the mid-17th century a first signalling tower was built. It is a coal tower of poor performance and the question of its replacement arises quickly. The second tower of Fréhel was built by engineer Garangeau. Its commissioning took place in 1702. It combines a truncated conical tower and a demi hors-oeuvre tower. The coal fire system is relayed by a lantern. The lighthouse functioned from 1702 to 1847. The construction of a third lighthouse was envisioned from 1840 and Léonce Reynaud supervised its construction: an octagonal tower in dressed stone centred on the façade of a rectangular building. The new light was lit on 1 May 1847. The tower was dynamited by the Germans in 1944: nothing remains of this lighthouse. A temporary light was then installed in the old tower built by Garangeau while awaiting the construction of a new lighthouse by architect Hémar. The style combines a form of regionalism and a reference to neo-medieval castle and 19th-century plans. Currently, the Garangeau tower is still visible and the fourth lighthouse, in service to this day, presents decorative elements in its interior relating to underwater fauna and flora.
