Ce monument commémore la Belle Défense de Saint-Jean-de-Losne fin octobre 1636 contre les troupes impériales du général Gallas. La proposition du maire Emile Petitjean, approuvée par le conseil municipal le 11 décembre 1886, conduit en quelques années à la réalisation du monument actuel. Le projet établi par l'architecte Félix Vionnois en 1890 précise que le monument se compose : premièrement d'un soubassement quadrangulaire percé de créneaux, supportant un canon en pierre à chacun des angles, deuxièmement, d'un piédestal carré dont deux faces portent des bas-reliefs en bronze et les deux autres des tables en marbre blanc, avec inscriptions ; troisièmement, d'une colonne tronconique en porphyre ; quatrièmement, de la vue perspective d'une ville fortifiée couronnant le tout. Le sculpteur Mathurin Moreau est choisi pour réaliser les deux bas-reliefs en bronze ornant le soubassement et représentant, du côté de la Saône, La Délibération et du côté de l'église, Les Combats sur les remparts. Le motif formant le couronnement est réalisé par le sculpteur dijonnais Jules Schanosky. Devant ce monument sont installés deux cannons, l'Embuscade et le Désastre (1864 et 1865) donnés à la Ville en 1901. Ils ont été inscrits Monuments historiques le 22 juillet 2013.

This monument commemorates the Fine Defence of Saint-Jean-de-Losne at the end of October 1636 against the imperial troops of General Gallas. The proposal of Mayor Emile Petitjean, approved by the municipal council on 11 December 1886, leads in a few years to the realisation of the present monument.
