This encircling fort, built on a height of 330 metres, was intended to withstand the frontal shock of the Prussian army. The fire of its cannons could create a barrage, crossed with that of the annexed battery of Norges. Its polygonal plan with lower battery was flanked by two wings at each salient, for the defence of the ditches. A caponier on the front head, two casemates on the curtain wall on either side of the entrance, defended the access leading to a bridge system, a unique model around Dijon. This bridge, of the Truck type, consisted of a platform rolling on two rails placed transversely in front of the entrance door. Its withdrawal under the guard post revealed a deep ditch creating a breach under the porche. The gorge facade and the curtain wall are preserved, bearing the date 1876-1877 above the entrance porche. The armament, distributed for flanking, the eight casemates and the ramparts, consists of forty-four pieces of artillery. The service of the artillery and infantry was assured by 735 men. The two cisterns had a total capacity of 600 cubic metres, allowing a six-month siege to be sustained. On 8 September 1944, the Germans blew up the ammunition depot stored in the fort, destroying it 90%.
