Historique

History
To meet the wishes of the inhabitants of the residential district of Parc, developed along the Grande Conche, the church of Notre-Dame du Parc was built in the 1950s by the architects Baraton, Bauhain and Hébrard. Largely inspired by the principles of modern architecture, in particular by the buildings of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (Saint-François d'Assise of Belo Horizonte), the edifice remains nonetheless traditional in the apprehension of its external appearance (harmonious façade), of the interior space of the building (single nave punctuated by 6 parabolic arches without supporting posts, lateral chapels), and of its decoration (use of stained glass and faïence plaques). The materials used take up this mixture of tradition and modernity combining concrete, which served in the development of the parabolic arches, and ashlar, which served in the construction of the base of the edifice and the building of the campanile bell tower. The simple plan of the edifice corresponds to the initial programme, and the opening made in the choir to increase capacity in the summer period is an ingenious solution to meet the needs of this type of building situated in a seaside resort. The decoration is elaborate and uses different materials such as stained glass or faïence from Gien in the external tympanum. The facings of the external walls themselves present an interesting texture, adorned with sinuous lines in the shape of a wave which generate subtle effects of light. For the realization of the decorative programme the architects were able to enlist the help of numerous artists close to the school of sacred art of Maurice Denis: the painters Maurice Rocher and André Trébuchet, as well as the master glazier, Jean Barillet. This edifice is all the more interesting in that it is a realization of the project that the architects had imagined for the church of Notre-Dame de Royan and thus echoes this flagship monument of the construction of Royan, making its protection and conservation judicious. Largely inspired by the church of Saint-François d'Assise by Oscar Niemeyer, it most likely inspired the architect of the temple of Saint-Georges de Didonne.
