Historique

History
The fortifications of Charente-Maritime belong to the vast complex which constitutes the Atlantic Wall, the construction of which is decided by Adolf Hitler following the entry into war of the United States in December 1941. The person responsible for this undertaking will be the Todt organization. These fortifications are monolithic and constructed in reinforced concrete. Intended to protect the port of La Rochelle, the Kora Karola battery was the most powerful structure of the Atlantic Wall south of the Loire. It comprises a naval battery, Kora, equipped with two guns with a range of 27 km, and an artillery position, Karola, with four guns capable of firing in all directions. The four guns of Karola are coupled in pairs in turrets resting on a concrete well. They are served by numerous rooms: troop room, workshops, ammunition stores, generator set... all of which is crossed by a Decauville.
