Historique

History
Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus died at the Carmel of Lisieux in 1897. Canonized in 1925, the chapel of the Carmel was no longer sufficient to accommodate the crowd of pilgrims coming to pray to the saint. A new sanctuary was decided by the ecclesiastical authorities. A first project, of neo-gothic inspiration, was presented by architect Jules Barbier in 1926. The architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier presented a project in 1927, which was approved. The architect modified his project several times until the definitive version of 1928. Works began in 1929. The crypt was blessed in 1932; the upper church in 1937. Begun by architect Ménage, who died in 1928, the monumental Way of the Cross was continued by Cordonnier. Interrupted during the war, the site resumed in 1944 and the basilica was officially consecrated in 1954. Constructed between 1958 and 1961, the bell tower was initially to measure 95 metres but, for lack of funding, it was reduced by half. The interior decoration was carried out by stained glass painters Pierre and Jean Gaudin, between 1948 and 1956 (1932 for the crypt). The monumental sculptures are the work of Robert Coin, put in place from 1963 onwards.
