Historique

History
A new development is designed by architect Guy Pison. A large penetrating radial thoroughfare structures the whole, composed of four-storey blocks and scattered towers. The reservoir is located to the north, in the axis of the road, and is accompanied by a rectangular square. Architect Guillaume Guillet is engaged to conduct the study which includes the water reservoir, a covered market and a circular ring at the level incorporating various public services. The architect defines a plan crossing the circle and the elliptical ring, an inverted cone composed of various upper cells (the reservoir). The concrete frame consists of a central core from which sixteen concrete beams radiate and are articulated at mid-height, each supported at its end by vertical posts in order to create both the stability and the cantilever necessary. The market covering consists of a succession of thin radiating vaults with incorporated glass slabs. Engineer René Sarger is in charge of all the concrete design. Work begins in 1957 and the first water commissioning tests begin in 1958. Sealing problems prevent the reservoir from being put into service before 1962. The work has remained partially unfinished. The ring is in the raw state and the surface of the covered market is partially occupied in a disorderly manner.
