Répondant à l'idée d'un monument dédié à Guillaume le Conquérant émise dès 1837, les frères Rochet remirent un projet en plâtre de groupe équestre en 1848. Guillaume le Conquérant, monté sur un cheval, a la tête tournée vers ses troupes et porte haut le gonfanon qui lui a été remis par le pape Alexandre III. Six statues des ducs de Normandie complètent le monument, fondues en 1875. History
Responding to the idea of a monument dedicated to William the Conqueror put forward from 1837, the Rochet brothers submitted a plaster model of an equestrian group in 1848. William the Conqueror, mounted on a horse, has his head turned towards his troops and carries high the gonfalon which was presented to him by Pope Alexander III. Six statues of the Dukes of Normandy complete the monument, cast in 1875. Louis Rochet attempted to offer a realistic representation of the hero, saying he had been inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry (chain mail, Norman helmet with fixed nasal, relics around the neck). The equestrian group was exhibited on the Champs-Elysées while architect Trolonge was completing the Sainte-Honorine granite base.
