History

The Manor of the Valleys located on the edges of the forest of Saint-Gatien is connected to the civil Anglo-Norman buildings raised at the end of the Romanesque period or at the beginning of the 13th century, combining a reception hall to the west, or aula, with a main dwelling to the east, housing a service room on the ground floor and a living room above. The building has undergone numerous modifications since, for the most part datable to the early 15th century, the 16th century (timber framing architecture), and the 17th century, and finally the 19th and 20th centuries. It constitutes one of the rare known examples, if not surviving, of the use at a modest seigneurial level of the Anglo-Norman scheme combining the hall and the living room above, represented in Lower Normandy by the castles of Beaumont-le-Richard at Englesqueville-la-Percée, of Loisail, of Glos-sur-Risle, of Fontaine-Henry, of Creully or of Bricquebec.
