The cemetery site presented the topographical peculiarity of being limited by a large cliff against which the monument is backed and cut. Marius Conte-Devolx, banker of the Crédit commercial de France, had a vault built at the foot of the cliff to bury the remains of the dead from the Great War. The presence of this vault facilitated the choice of location for the monument, for which a competition was launched in 1923 by the banker. The sculptor Eugène Piron was selected in 1924. The inauguration took place on 11 November 1925. A forecourt accessed by a long flight of steps leads to the monument. This forecourt is bounded by two rows of cypresses. It consists of a breach cut into the cliff, previously bordered along its entire length by chapels and funerary monuments which were replaced by the monument. The latter takes the form of a trapezoidal breach. At the centre is represented the bugle of the sublime awakening, turned towards the interior of the cliff. In the round, it bears all the attributes of the Poilu (helmet, tunic, haversack, water bottle, puttees, shoes, leg wrappings, rifle). On either side, two groups of poilus emerge from the rock, represented in an evanescent manner, like the shades of the deceased. Below, a heap of scattered blocks bears the names of the dead of 1914-1918. At the top of the cliff is engraved the dedication "To our dead, 1914-1918".
