The Ministère de la Culture's notice
Historique

History
Of Hungarian origin, Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) elaborates from 1966 a project for an architectonic centre bringing together the two parts of his work, one pictorial (optical art), the other theoretical. The first is presented from 1970 in the château of Gordes; for the second, a building designed entirely by Vasarely is constructed by Jean Sonnier and his associate Dominique Ronsseray: it is inaugurated in 1976. A large sculpture, in the form of a V, marks the building, whose blank façade presents itself as a repetitive folding alternating panels white ground - black ground. The foundation is constituted of sixteen adjoining hexagonal cells; it is not a museum, but an artistic centre with multiple functions: exhibition of "integrations", educational purpose, centre for exchanges on contemporary creation,... The edifice comprises a concrete frame, clad with aluminium panels or glazing; lighting is provided by overhead glazing.
