Historique

History
In the 16th century, Tarascon being a staging town, the inhabitants were subjected to the lodging and maintenance of military personnel. In 1695, the town received authorisation to construct barracks. Construction began in 1718 on the plans of Desfour. The large quarter around a large courtyard was reserved for the cavalry. The small quarter was divided into two courtyards, one for the infantry, the other for the stores of the staging post. The buildings are on two levels, flanked at the angles by pavilions. The ground floor is fitted out with vaulted rooms reserved for stables; the upper floor consists of dormitories for soldiers. The administration occupied the wing between the two quarters. In the 18th century, these buildings could accommodate up to 1275 men and 500 horses. First enlargement between 1834 and 1840 (stables brought up to veterinary standards). Construction of other buildings between 1844 and 1845. Riding school built in 1846. Disciplinary quarters fitted out in 1862. Construction of three buildings from 1877 onwards to increase the volume of forage storage. End of the 19th century, construction of kitchens, canteens and an infirmary. In 1911, new riding school with metal roof structure.
