The islet has been occupied by a lighthouse since the Middle Ages. The present lighthouse is the fifth on Planier (1320; 1774; 1829; 1881; 1959). The 1881 lighthouse having been destroyed in August 1944, reconstruction was entrusted to the Arbus and Crillon firm which undertook from 1947 onwards a construction in ashlar stone of the lighthouse and its annexes. Judged too costly, the work remained unfinished. The whole consists of two parts: the lighthouse to the east of the islet; the ancillary buildings organized in two wings, to the north (dwellings) and to the west (workshops, engine room, technical rooms) of a vast courtyard. The lighthouse is a slightly truncated column-tower, in masonry of apparent stones. Served by a spiral staircase, it presents a total height of 71.66 metres. The choice of material, an architecture both eclectic and neo-visionary, the staging of the lighthouse and its annexes as an ordered square in the middle of the sea, produce a spectacular monumental ensemble.
