Historique
Située à l’ouest de la Cité de Carcassonne, le long de la montée d’Aude, l’église du faubourg est dominée par la fortification. En 1688, une chapelle est construite au faubourg de la Barbacane, dédiée à saint Gimer évêque de Carcassonne de 903 à 932, qui serait né à cet emplacement. Au XIXe siècle, la population du faubourg s’étant accrue considérablement en raison de la présence des manufactures de textile, la chapelle est érigée en succursale par ordonnance du 31 mai 1840. Il est alors question de remplacer l’édifice trop exigu et en mauvais état par une nouvelle construction plus adaptée à l’importance de la paroisse.
Description
L’église est composée d’une nef de six travées avec des bas-côtés, précédée d’un porche flanqué d’une chapelle des fonts baptismaux et d’un clocher. L’édifice couvert en tuiles possède caractère méridional affirmé avec la forme du clocher, placé à droite de la façade.

History
Located to the west of the Cité de Carcassonne, along the montée d'Aude, the church of the suburb is dominated by the fortification. In 1688, a chapel is built in the suburb of the Barbacane, dedicated to Saint Gimer bishop of Carcassonne from 903 to 932, who is said to have been born at this location. In the 19th century, the population of the suburb having increased considerably due to the presence of textile manufactures, the chapel is raised to the status of subsidiary church by ordinance of 31 May 1840. The church is composed of a nave of six bays with aisles, preceded by a porch flanked by a baptismal font chapel and a bell tower. The building, covered in tiles, possesses a marked southern character with the form of the bell tower, placed to the right of the façade.
