History

The villa, or château, of La Pipière was built between 1909 and 1910 in the wooded massif of the same name, dominating the valley of the Aube. Its patron, Maurice Piot (1875-1946), from a family originating in the neighbouring village of Lignol, later became mayor of this village and general councillor. He chose as architect Paul Jouenne, born in Paris in 1866, of whom the villa appears to be one of the most important achievements. The building, little modified since its construction, is a good example of the "villa", a compact construction, at several levels, offering an elaborate view of its surroundings and benefiting, at the time of its construction, from all modern comforts. Its plan is hexagonal; the façades are of local stone, pierced by openings emphasized by balconies or oriels painted red. The roof is in slate. The main outbuilding opens onto a particularly striking depressed arch. The whole manifests the "landscaped regionalist" style in vogue at the time, in the wake of the work of architect Louis Bonnier.
