Après le Concordat, le Mas-d'Azil devint siège du consistoire protestant de l'Ariège. En 1804, l'ancienne église paroissiale fut achetée, restaurée et aménagée pour le culte pour la somme de 8600 fr. En 1820, l'édifice menaçant ruine et se révélant trop exigu, on racheta des dépendances de l'ancienne abbaye, dont le lazaret, pour y construire le temple actuel et le presbytère, qui renferme des vestiges médiévaux de cet hôpital et probablement de la chapelle construite en 1673. Les travaux étaient terminés en 1821, date portée sur le portail principal. Le temple fut inauguré en 1824. Lors de la séparation des Eglises et de l'Etat (1905), une association cultuelle fut constituée : elle se rattacha en 1938 aux Eglises réformées évangéliques indépendantes. La commune du Mas d'Azil possède trois temples : la chapelle néogothique d'Amboix construite grâce aux largesses de la famille au 19e s. et le temple de Rieubac.
Description
Ayant pour dimensions extérieures 27,80 m sur 11 m , le temple est un rectangle allongé qui s'étend, du sud-ouest au nord-est entre la rue du temple qui s'élargit en une placette mettant en valeur la façade et le boulevard extérieur du bourg où il présente son chevet plat. Au sud-ouest lui est accolé le presbytère, dont une aile en retour d'équerre présente des vestiges du lazaret médiéval de l'abbaye. Il est couvert d'un toit à longs pans et à croupe.Malgré l'existence d'un plan du XVIIIe s. conservé aux archives départementales de l'Ariège, il est malaisé de comparer la configuration des édifices portés sur ce document et celle du plan cadastral actuel.

History
After the Concordat, Mas-d'Azil became the seat of the Protestant consistory of Ariège. In 1804, the former parish church was purchased, restored and fitted out for worship for the sum of 8600 francs. In 1820, the building threatening to collapse and proving too cramped, dependencies of the former abbey were bought back, including the lazaret, to construct the present temple and the presbytery, which contains medieval vestiges of this hospital and probably of the chapel built in 1673. During the separation of Church and State (1905), a religious association was established: it affiliated in 1938 with the independent evangelical reformed Churches. Description
With exterior dimensions of 27.80 m by 11 m, the temple is an elongated rectangle that extends, from south-west to north-east between the rue du temple which widens into a small square enhancing the façade and the outer boulevard of the borough where it presents its flat chevet. To the south-west is adjoined the presbytery, one wing of which in a right-angled return presents remains of the medieval lazaret of the abbey. It is covered with a roof with long slopes and hipped ends. Despite the existence of an 18th-century plan preserved in the departmental archives of Ariège, it is difficult to compare the configuration of the buildings shown on this document with that of the current cadastral plan.
