Historique
Lhôtel de ville de Rethel fut rebâti après les destructions survenues lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, entre 1925 et 1931 selon les plans de larchitecte M. Boulanger. Construit dans un style oscillant entre le néo-Renaissance et le néo-Louis XIII, il se distingue par sa monumentalité rappelant limportance du concept de République et de lidentité nationale au lendemain de la guerre. Dès 1927, le peintre Eugène Thiéry élabore le projet dorner le salon de lhôtel de ville. Réalisées entre 1934 et 1935, les tableaux seront repris ou restaurés par le peintre lui-même, entre 1950 et 1953, à la suite des dommages occasionnés lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il en résulte une série de toiles marouflées utilisant la technique de la peinture à la cire, et retraçant le Rethel davant la Première Guerre à partir de cartes postales avec des vues attrayantes remplies de personnages anonymes ou connus comme, par exemple, le président Lebrun dans « La place de lHôtel de Ville ».

History
The town hall of Rethel was rebuilt after the destructions occurring during the First World War, between 1925 and 1931 according to the plans of architect M. Boulanger. Built in a style oscillating between neo-Renaissance and neo-Louis XIII, it stands out through its monumentality recalling the importance of the concept of the Republic and national identity in the aftermath of the war.
