Historique

History
The construction of the present edifice dates from the middle of the 16th century, the date of 1567 being inscribed on one of the chimneys. The edifice presents a usual plan since the 15th century, with a rectangular main dwelling flanked by four round towers. The water-filled moat remains visible on three sides. Rectangular gun-loops are pierced in the towers to ensure the protection of all four façades, on three levels, retaining the firing rest allowing stabilisation of the weapon. The entrance door is adorned with vermiculated rustication and statuettes of atlantes, decoration characteristic of French Renaissance after 1550. The lower storey is entirely vaulted in stone, with ribs of rectangular section. In the kitchen, they spring from an isolated pillar at the centre of the room, a usual arrangement. One of the towers contains the spiral staircase. The two storeys each comprise two rooms with ceilings à la française and fireplaces. The two chimneys of the first floor have been partly altered in the 19th century. The buildings surrounding the castle are all more recent: the steward's pavilion bears the date 1773; the symmetrical building is an addition from the late 19th century. At that time the outbuildings situated at the south-west entrance of the castle are destroyed. This castle presents itself as a testimony to the fortified construction of the 16th-century Ardennes.
