At the beginning of the 19th century, Largentière, which had to equip itself with a hospital and a courthouse, found itself confronted with financial problems. The courthouse-prison which was initially located in the castle moved after very many episodes to the new courthouse of 1847. However, it was necessary to involve several actors including the architect Louis-Pierre Baltard who produced the first viable plans for this building. Unfortunately, regularly insufficient or underestimated financial envelopes delayed the work and Baltard did not see the completion of the work. The engineer Weil, then the architect Chevillet, completed the work on the courthouse which was somewhat modified compared to Baltard's initial plans. The building functioned officially as a prison until 1926, then the courthouse closed its doors in 2010.

The courthouse is installed on a rocky promontory dominating the river la Ligne and facing the old town of Largentière, its positioning responds to the château which is installed on the other side, in the heart of the old village. Its neoclassical façade responds to the fashion which developed during the first half of the 19th century, of mimicking the canons of ancient temples for public buildings and courthouses in particular. The offices of the members of the courthouse, the hall of lost footsteps and the great audience chamber with its lateral galleries form the façade and the heart of the building at the upper levels. The lower levels and the north part being reserved for the prison. Although less prestigious by its destination, the carceral part preserves all the attributes and arrangements initially provided.
