Historique

History
The sculptor Gaston Le Bourgeois was distinguished for the artistic realization of the monument and the local architect Léon Le Bel was charged with implementing the "commemorative portico" project, a sort of tempieto of square plan supported by four pillars, covered with a hip roof, blending Provençal influences and antique architecture which was adopted. The monument was inaugurated on 4 March 1928. Its construction was the occasion for a complete urban development consisting of a small square-parvis surrounding the building, with small gardens, flagstone surfaces, wrought-iron grilles and vegetable fencing, as well as a long straight staircase with landings connecting the square to the Rue Trécastel below and a crypt composed of two rooms located beneath the square. The Art Deco style decoration draws on iconography linked to war. Action scenes alternate with those depicting the daily life of soldiers in the trenches. This decoration is visible on all faces of the four capitals as well as in the spandrels of the arches of the crowning.
