History
Beacon marking the entrance to the Ratapignata grotto on the slopes of Mont-Chauve. Its construction is linked to the discovery of this grotto by Domenico Rossetti in 1803, and to the publication in 1804 of his poem extolling his discovery. The edifice was built in the years that followed and is indubitably attested in 1814. Of roughly square plan measuring 6m per side at the base, the pyramid is constructed of rubble stone masonry and was doubtless rendered. The south-east face is pierced by an opening giving access to the grotto. The work bears witness to a fashion that marked France in the early 19th century, following the Napoleonic campaigns: Egyptomania.
